Most people who work in a Texas high-rise have never thought much about the elevator that carries them to their floor. It arrives, the doors open, they step in. Sixty seconds later they are at their desk. The machinery behind that sixty seconds is more sophisticated than most realize, and its history in Texas goes back further than most would guess.

Texas has been adding population and square footage at a pace that few American states can match. Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio have spent the better part of a century building upward, and the elevator infrastructure inside those buildings tells a parallel story to the one on the skyline. This article traces that story, from a hydraulic lift in an 1895 Houston office building to the super-tall towers currently reshaping the Austin and Dallas skylines.

Texas Growth, by the Numbers

In 1900, Houston had fewer than 45,000 residents. The Houston metropolitan area now holds more than 7.5 million people. Dallas-Fort Worth has grown into one of the three largest metro areas in the country. Austin added nearly 11 percent to its population between 2020 and 2024 alone, making it one of the fastest-growing large cities in the United States. San Antonio added more residents in raw numbers than any other American city in 2023.

That kind of growth puts constant pressure on the built environment. Office towers, hospitals, hotels, apartment buildings, and mixed-use developments need to go up when land costs rise and urban cores get denser. And buildings taller than two or three stories are not practically usable without reliable vertical transportation. The elevator is less of a convenience in these buildings than a basic operating requirement.

The First Elevator in Texas

The story starts at the corner of Main Street and Texas Avenue in downtown Houston in 1895. That was the address of the Binz Building, a six-story structure of wood framing with brick and stone cladding that was, at the time, the tallest building in Houston. Jacob Binz, a German immigrant who had arrived in the city by way of Chicago, hired architect Olle Lorehn to design it. The building attracted attention across the region, but the feature that drew the most curiosity was inside: a hydraulic elevator.

Hydraulic elevators of that era used water pressure to push a piston that raised and lowered the cab. The technology was common in major eastern cities but novel in Texas. People boarded special train excursions from across the region to visit the Binz Building and ride the elevator to the sixth floor. For many of them, it was the first time they had been in any powered vertical conveyance.

That single lift established something important: tall buildings were now viable in Texas, not just structurally but operationally. Over the following decades, electric traction elevators replaced hydraulic systems in taller buildings, steel-frame construction pushed floor counts higher, and Texas architects began designing around elevator core placement as a standard part of the process.

Dallas joined the high-rise conversation in 1909 with the 14-story Praetorian Building, which rose 190 feet and was the first structure in the state that most observers would call a true high-rise. By the 1920s, both cities were building towers that required multiple elevator banks, lobby dispatching systems, and the early versions of the cab scheduling logic that engineers still refine today.

Hydraulic vs. Traction Elevators: Hydraulic elevators use a piston driven by fluid pressure to lift the cab. They are still common in low-rise buildings (2-5 floors) because they require no overhead machine room. Traction elevators, which power taller buildings, run steel cables over a sheave turned by an electric motor, with a counterweight to reduce energy demand. Modern gearless traction machines in high-rise towers can reach speeds of 1,000 to 2,000 feet per minute.

Five Buildings Worth Knowing

The Binz Building, Houston (1895)

The original Binz Building no longer stands, but it belongs at the beginning of any Texas elevator timeline. Its single hydraulic lift was operated by a dedicated attendant who rode with passengers through six floors of office and commercial space. In a city where most residents had never seen a powered elevator, the ride to the top floor was an event. People planned day trips around it. The building was eventually demolished as downtown Houston evolved, but the role it played in normalizing vertical transportation across the state was real.

Gulf Building, Houston (1929)

The Gulf Building held the title of tallest structure in Houston from 1929 until 1963, a 34-year run that spanned two world wars and the early decades of the Texas oil industry. At 37 stories and 428 feet, it was a serious Art Deco building: tiered setback profile, ornate bronze lobby details, and a banking hall that is still considered one of the finer commercial interiors in the city.

The elevator banks served the oil executives and financiers who worked in the building during Houston’s first sustained energy boom. By 1929, automatic floor-call systems were becoming standard in premium office towers, and the Gulf Building’s elevator vestibule, with its brass doors and marble surrounds, was designed to communicate the same quality as the rest of the building.

Pennzoil Place, Houston (1975)

Few commercial buildings in American architecture caused as much conversation when they opened. Pennzoil Place, designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee and completed in 1975, consists of twin 36-story towers with trapezoidal floor plates clad in dark bronze glass. The two towers share a common base and are separated by a ten-foot gap, connected by a 115-foot glass atrium. Architectural historians credit it as the first Postmodernist skyscraper, a deliberate break from the rectilinear glass boxes that had defined commercial architecture for the previous two decades.

The trapezoidal geometry created a real engineering challenge for the elevator cores. A standard rectangular tower has predictable interior space; a trapezoid does not. Designers had to place the mechanical shafts carefully within the irregular floor plates while keeping cab counts high enough to serve both towers efficiently. The solution has held up for nearly fifty years.

JPMorgan Chase Tower, Houston (1981)

When it opened as Texas Commerce Tower in 1981, this I.M. Pei design set several records at once: tallest building in Houston, sixth-tallest in the United States, tallest granite-clad structure in the world, and tallest composite concrete-and-steel building ever built at that time. At 75 stories and 1,002 feet, it still defines the Houston skyline. Its five-sided plan, achieved by shearing one corner at a 45-degree angle, gives it a blade-like profile that photographs differently from every direction.

The building has 52 high-speed elevators. The ride from the lobby to the 60th floor takes about 60 seconds, which works out to roughly 1,000 feet per minute. At that speed, smooth operation requires precision at every stage: controlled acceleration, stable mid-shaft travel, and a deceleration that brings the cab level with each floor’s threshold within a few millimeters. At full occupancy the building’s elevator system moves several thousand people per hour, coordinating cab assignments and load distribution across all 75 floors.

Reunion Tower, Dallas (1978)

Reunion Tower is one of the more distinctive structures on the Dallas skyline, rising 561 feet to a geodesic sphere that locals call ‘The Ball.’ The sphere houses a revolving restaurant, an observation deck called the GeO-Deck, and event space. It opened in 1978 as part of the Hyatt Regency Dallas hotel complex, adjacent to the old Union Station.

What makes the elevator experience here different from a standard office tower is that the cabs run on the exterior of the central concrete column, with glass panels on the outward-facing walls. The 68-second ride to the observation level puts the Dallas skyline directly in front of you as you ascend. The design choice is deliberate: in an observation tower, the journey up is part of what visitors are paying for, and transparent cabs make that possible.

Oil Money and the Buildings It Built

Texas’s construction booms have closely tracked its energy cycles. The Spindletop gusher of 1901 near Beaumont launched an oil industry that reshaped Houston in particular, turning it into headquarters territory for energy companies that needed office space at scale. The 1920s brought the Gulf Building and several other downtown towers. The post-World War II expansion added the first wave of Modernist office slabs. The oil boom of the 1970s and early 1980s produced the most dramatic surge, giving Houston Pennzoil Place, the JPMorgan Chase Tower, and dozens of other major towers within roughly a decade.

Dallas built its skyline on a somewhat different economic base: banking, insurance, and retail alongside energy. The 1980s brought Philip Johnson’s Comerica Bank Tower (60 stories, 787 feet), the 56-story Renaissance Tower, and a cluster of glass-clad buildings that gave downtown Dallas one of the more recognizable skylines in the South. Each of those buildings required elevator systems engineered to move large numbers of people reliably through its full height every business day.

Austin’s trajectory has been different in kind. For most of the twentieth century it was a mid-sized state capital. The tech expansion of the 2010s changed that quickly. Apple, Tesla, Oracle, Dell, and dozens of other companies established major operations there, and construction followed. More buildings taller than 300 feet were completed in Austin after 2014 than in all previous decades combined. The 875-foot Sixth and Guadalupe tower opened in 2023, and the Waterline, topping out at over 1,034 feet, will be the tallest building in the state when it completes.

San Antonio tends to be overlooked in architectural discussions, but its growth numbers are hard to ignore. The city has added tens of thousands of residents annually, driven by healthcare, military installations, and tourism. Hospitals are among the most elevator-intensive building types in existence: patient lifts, dedicated service elevators, and cab systems that need to meet strict reliability standards are all part of what a major medical campus requires. As San Antonio’s hospital sector grows, so does the demand for elevator installation and maintenance in that city.

Modernization, Preservation, and Current Technology

Many of Texas’s most notable buildings are now old enough to need serious elevator work. The Gulf Building has had its mechanical systems updated multiple times across its nearly century-long life. Pennzoil Place, approaching its 50th anniversary, has gone through elevator upgrades as ownership has changed and tenant expectations have risen. The JPMorgan Chase Tower, at over four decades old, has components that require ongoing modernization to keep pace with current safety and performance standards.

Modernizing elevators in architecturally significant buildings requires some care. The mechanical components, including motors, controllers, cables, and safety systems, can be updated to current standards with relatively little constraint. The visible parts are more complicated: cab interiors, door surrounds, and indicator panels are often part of a building’s character, and in properties subject to historic tax credit programs or preservation guidelines, contractors need to match period-appropriate finishes while meeting modern code requirements.

Current elevator technology has moved in several directions at once. Destination dispatch systems, where passengers enter their floor at a lobby kiosk before boarding, group riders heading to the same floor and reduce both wait time and total travel time. Machine-room-less traction elevators have made high-performance vertical transportation practical in mid-rise buildings that lack the overhead space a traditional machine room requires. Predictive maintenance systems use onboard sensors to track wear on mechanical components and flag potential issues before they cause an outage, which matters considerably in a building where an elevator shutdown affects hundreds or thousands of occupants.

For new construction, elevator planning begins well before the foundation is poured. Architects, structural engineers, and elevator consultants work through how many banks are needed, what cab speeds are appropriate for the building’s height and population, and how the system will be maintained across a lifespan that is typically expected to run 50 to 100 years. The buildings going up now in Dallas’s Uptown district, along Houston’s Post Oak corridor, and in central Austin will be carrying people to their floors well into the twenty-second century.

For building owners and managers in Texas: Texas elevator safety inspections are governed by the Texas Department of Insurance. State regulations require periodic inspections and certificates of compliance for most commercial and multi-family residential elevators. A qualified elevator service contractor can handle inspection scheduling, code-required repairs, and full modernization projects from cab refurbishment to complete drive and controller replacement.

A Long History Still Running

The Binz Building’s hydraulic lift and the 52 high-speed cabs in the JPMorgan Chase Tower are separated by 86 years and about 996 feet of vertical travel. In between them is the entire story of how Texas learned to build tall: the oil booms that created demand for office space, the architects who figured out how to fill that demand with buildings worth looking at, and the elevator engineers who made those buildings usable.

Texas will keep adding population and keep adding height. The pipeline of commercial, residential, and mixed-use towers across Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio is as full as it has been in decades. Every one of those buildings will need elevators installed correctly, maintained reliably, and eventually modernized. That work has been going on in this state for 130 years, and there is no reason to think it slows down anytime soon.
